QotD: Black Friday

Comments

Very true. But, the reason they call it Black Friday is because it is the day that many shops get out of the red into the black on their balance books. There are always massive sales on here the Friday after Thanksgiving Thursday and they use those to lure the shoppers in hoping they will buy up big.
Ohhh, I was wondering why it's called Black Friday, since that to me has the connotation of something bad (usually applied to any Friday 13th, but never to any other Friday here in Aust).
When I first came here I was confused because it was not a 13th. Apparently most businesses spend the year trading at a loss and need the "holiday season" to turn things around. In the last couple of years "cyber Monday" has evolved and that is this Monday - I heard that it is the day that the stores put sale items online that they did not sell on Black Friday & w/end. There are also incentives like free delivery. ( Here in DC, to help retailers, the sales tax is lifted for certain days during the "holidays".)

Basically from Thanksgiving to Christmas/New Year is referred to as the "holiday season".
I bought one christmas gift yesterday...online. haha! Glad you got a proper definition of why we call it black friday! :))
