QotD: Laundry Day
How often do you do laundry? Do you have your own washer and dryer or do you have to leave your home?
When I was married and had three kids I used to be doing washing most if not all days of the week. Now that I'm living alone I think I average about three loads of washing per fortnight. I've got a washing machine but I've never owned a dryer, even when I was living in one of the wetter parts of Australia (Marysville, Victoria) with three young children including a new baby. I've always been able to get the washing dry in winter by a combination of hanging it outside under a verandah and drying the most urgent things on clothes airers in front of the heater. In summer, of course, getting the washing dry outside isn't usually a problem, especially here in Perth where wet things sometimes get dry in an hour or so out on the line. Doing the washing is one of my favourite housework activities (the only one I actually like); I really enjoy being outside hanging the wet things on the line and then later going out and bringing them inside when they're dry. I even enjoy colour matching my clothes pegs! I don't really like using a clothes dryer because I believe it tends to shrink some things, and because I like the way the things smell when they've dried outside in the sun and wind.
